A Quaker Meeting
for Worship is held every Sunday from 10.30 to 11.30, as it has been since
1688.All are welcome.
The History of the Meeting House
Quaker worship in the Hawkshead area
began sometime before 1653 and when in 1658 one of their number died a plot of
land was purchased in which to bury her.
A stone wall was built to enclose the land and stone seats were built
into the wall. This became both the
burial ground and the place of worship for local Quakers for thirty years. It still exists just around the corner from
the Meeting House and is open to the public (and still used as a place of
worship on a nice day).
In 1688 the present meeting house was
built, registered as a place of worship 1689 and used by Quakers without a break
ever since.
The building has been extended and
altered over the years but still retains many of its original features (though
thankfully not the earth floor of the very early years) and is now a Grade II
listed building.Members of the public
are welcome to use the gardens as a peaceful haven and the building can be
opened on request to Paul or Rachael on 01539 436691.
