History of Swarthmoor HallSwarthmoor Hall was built in 1586 by George Fell a local landowner. His son Thomas (Judge Fell), inherited the Hall.In 1652 George Fox, the founder of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), gained the support and encouragement of Margaret, Thomas’ wife. The Hall became the “powerhouse” behind the Quaker movement, which spread all over the country, to the Americas and continental Europe before the end of the century. It is now home to a fine collection of 17th century furniture and artifacts, and is open to the public.
