History of Swarthmoor Hall

Swarthmoor Hall was built in 1586 by George Fell a local landowner.  His son Thomas (Judge Fell), inherited the Hall.

In 1652 George Fox, the founder of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), gained the support and encouragement of Margaret, Thomas’ wife. The Hall became the “powerhouse” behind the Quaker movement, which spread all over the country, to the Americas and continental Europe before the end of the century.
In 1914 Emma Clarke Abraham, a direct descendant of the Fell family, began its restoration. It was acquired by the  Religious Society of Friends in 1954.

It is now home to a fine collection of 17th century furniture and artifacts, and is open to the public.
